Understanding RCD Protection and Why It Trips
RCDs constantly monitor the electrical current flowing through your circuits. If they detect an imbalance – indicating current is leaking to earth, possibly through a person – they cut the power in milliseconds.
Why RCDs trip and what it means:
Genuine faults – RCDs are doing their job when they detect:
- Damaged cables or appliances with earth faults
- Water ingress into electrical equipment
- Deteriorating wiring insulation
- Faulty appliances creating dangerous leakage currents
Nuisance tripping – Sometimes RCDs trip without real danger:
- Accumulated earth leakage from multiple older appliances
- Moisture in outdoor circuits after heavy rain
- Worn or faulty RCD mechanisms
- Incorrectly sized RCD for the connected load
When an RCD trips:
- Unplug appliances and try resetting
- If it resets and stays on, plug appliances back one at a time to identify the culprit
- If it won’t reset or trips immediately, call an electrician – this indicates a serious fault
- Never force an RCD to stay on or bypass it – this removes critical safety protection
Regular testing is essential – RCDs have a test button that should be pressed quarterly to ensure the mechanism works. If the RCD doesn’t trip when tested, it’s faulty and needs replacement urgently.
Modern consumer units increasingly use RCBOs (combined RCD and circuit breaker) for each circuit rather than one RCD protecting multiple circuits. This prevents your whole house losing power when one circuit has a fault.
Our expert electrical contractors Edinburgh are ready to help with testing as needed.

When You Need Professional RCD Testing or Replacement
While you should test RCD buttons quarterly yourself, professional testing and maintenance identifies problems you can’t detect.
Periodic inspection and testing – Electrical installations should be professionally tested every 10 years (5 years for rental properties). This includes thorough RCD testing that checks:
- Trip time at rated current (should be under 40 milliseconds)
- Trip current accuracy
- Mechanical operation
- Contact resistance We identify RCDs that are worn, slow to trip, or operating outside safe parameters – all invisible to simple button testing.
After RCD trips – If your RCD is tripping regularly, we’ll:
- Test the RCD itself to ensure it’s functioning correctly
- Conduct insulation resistance tests on circuits to find earth leakage
- Identify which circuits or appliances are causing problems
- Recommend repairs or replacements as needed
RCD replacement – RCDs should be replaced if they:
- Fail trip time testing
- Won’t reset after tripping
- Feel hot or show signs of damage
- Are original equipment in consumer units over 15-20 years old
Upgrading RCD protection – Many older consumer units have just one or two RCDs protecting all circuits. We can upgrade to RCBO protection, where each circuit has individual protection, preventing whole-house power loss from a single fault.
New circuit additions – When adding circuits for showers, EV chargers, or outdoor equipment, we ensure appropriate RCD protection is included.
Professional RCD testing is typically part of periodic inspection and testing, but our fuseboard replacement specialists can test and replace RCDs as standalone work if you’re experiencing problems. All work is certified and registered with SELECT. Most RCD replacements take 2-3 hours including testing.
